IPO and Ankober Woreda Health Bureau have opened preliminary agreements on the construction of local health center. The project aims at improving health care access and quality service in the area.The 2011 objective is providing the area with the health center, in line with Ethiopian Development Plan which foresees the construction of one health center each 25000 inhabitants.
Nowadays over 75000 inhabitants living in Ankober Woreda have to cover around 40 km to reach Debre Berhan hospital, the nearest center able to meet a wider health care demand.

The laboratory is established in ancient Ankober in the framework of cooperation between the Italian association “Increasing Peoples Opportunities” (IPO) and Ankober Woreda Development Association (AWDA) in promoting community Herbal Care.The Laboratory was officially opened on Saturday June 5, 2010 in the presence of about 150 invited guests.

In December and January IPO has realized didactic laboratories in Perugia primary schools, within the framework of Community Herbal Care project. The courses dealt with several arguments such as biodiversity, children rights, cooperation among countries and universal access to health care. The documentary “Discovering Ethiopia”, realized by IPO with audiovisual material, has been shown to students, in order to explain Ethiopian culture and biodiversity. At the end of the lessons, children prepared an handiwork realized with pictorial techniques and materials, such as the use of natural colouring. 














The training in Fundamentals of Herbal Medicines preparation techniques began last 9 April, in Ankober galenical laboratory, in the Ethiopian Highlands. Eight researchers from Debre Berhan University will attend two months of training, 16 lessons in total, in order to learn herbal medicines preparation techniques for Ankober community needs. Trainees will be assisted by an Italian pharmacist, who will teach them fundamentals of pharmacognosy. The programme will alternate between lessons in theory and practical works, during which the pharmacist will teach trainees how to prepare herbal medicines with officinal plants, in order to produce topical medications, creams and ointments, to treat dermatological diseases in the area. The training is addressed to university researchers coming from different scientific faculties of Debre Berhan University. They will teach, in their turn, the knowledge acquired to students of their courses.
